Toronto is to shake up its industry conference with Empire producer Wendy Calhoun, Oddlot Entertainment’s Gigi Pritzker and Warner Bros.’ Niija Kuykendall to talk about “uncovering unconscious bias” when financing female-led movies.
The Hollywood gender bias panel will also include Women in View’s Rina Fraticelli, Lydia Dean Pilcher of Cine Mosaic and Indiewire’s Melissa Silverstein. Other symposium headliners announced Thursday include Trainwreck star Bill Hader, NATO’s John Fithian, Voltage Pictures’ Nicolas Chartier and IM Global’s Bonnie Voland.
There will also be master classes by Stephen Frears (The Program), Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Winter Sleep) and Jia Zhang-ke (Mountains May Depart). The Asian Film Summit will include Huay Brothers International’s Felice Bee and Wanda’s Jerry Ye talking Hollywood-China collaborations and An Xiaofen of Desen International Media and Andy Yi of iQuiyi discussing how to clear Chinese film industry hurdles.
The industry conference will also feature a case study on the romance/horror Spring, with directors Justin Benson and Aaron Morehead and Drafthouse Films’ Tim League sharing the stage, and daily state-of-the-industry overviews presented by Vice Media’s Danny Gabai, Protagonist Pictures’ Mike Goodridge, Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Lorenzo Soria and Goodloe Law’s Bianca Goodhoe.
The Toronto industry conference will also hold panels on movie financing and co-production, marketing, sales and distribution and next-generation digital content. The Toronto Film Festival’s 40th edition is set to run from Sept. 10 to 20.
